The San Miguel Wine-cellar is within the framework of the Abona Denomination of Origin label. This is a region with unique characteristics and vineyards which extend from elevations near sea-level, to very high locations over 1,000 metres above sea-level.
The winecellar was created on the initiative of various farmers who made wine with the grapes grown on their potato farms. The original results were artisanal and destined for sale by the litre. For that reason, they felt the urge to unite as a cooperative, to make wine and start bottling it under the Regulatory Council of Abona label, with the minimum quality controls demanded by the market. In this way, the wine cellar became the first regional winery on the island.
